SHORT HISTORY OF THE DEP ARTMENT
The Department of Banking & Finance is a foundation Department of the new
Faculty of Management Sciences. It emerged from the Finance core of the old
Department of Business Administration, merging with the existing Banking &
Finance programme from the Department of Economics and Statistics during
the creation of the Faculty of Management Sciences and the restructuring of the
Faculty of Social Sciences in November 2006. The Department reflects the
reality of Banking and Finance as the heart of private sector-driven
industrialisation and development in a globalised environment.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES:
The major objectives of the Department is to offer a solid and cutting-edge
education in Banking and Finance (at both undergraduate and postgraduate
levels) to all students enrolled in this area and to give them a firm foundation for
effective leadership in the society in general and Nigeria in particular as Finance
Experts and Managers, Bankers, Administrators, Management Executives and
allied professionals.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
(A) Four Y ear B.Sc Programme in Banking and Finance.
(i) West African School /SSCE Cert i ficate (or approved
equivalent) with credit passes in at least five subjects which
shoul d i ncl ude Engl i sh Language, Mat hemat i cs and
Economics (obtained in not more than two sittings) or
equivalent credit passes in the General Certificate of Education
at the ordinary level (also obtained in not more than two
sittings).
(ii) The required Unified T ertiary Matriculation Examination
(UTME) subjects are:
English Language
Mathematics
Economics
Plus any other Social Sciences subject
B. Admission Requirements for the Three Y ear Programme.
(iii) Requirements in A(1) above
PLUS
T wo subjects at the GCE A/L or HSC, one of which should be
Accounting and the other either Economics or Business
Management.
(iv) Requirements in A (I) plus
The Ordinary National Diploma in Banking & Finance or
Accounting or any relevant subject (Passed with minimum
average of upper credit) from a recognized State or Federal,
Polytechnics or College of T echnology .
(v) Requirements in A (I) Plus
The Diploma in Banking and Finance/ Accounting, and any
other relevant area with a minimum credit pass from the
University of Benin or any other recognized University.
(vi) A Higher National Diploma in any relevant subject awarded by
a recognized State, Federal, Polytechnic or College of
T echnology .
(vii) A bachelor’s degree in any subject awarded by a recognized
University.
C. Admission Requirements for the T wo Y ear Programme
(i) Requirement in A(I) plus
The Higher National Diploma in Banking and Finance or
Accounting (passed with a Minimum of B+ average) of a
recognised Polytechnic or College of T echnology .
DEGREE PROGRAMME AND DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
The first and second year of the four-year programme in the Department run
parallel courses with other Departments in the Faculty . Major Banking and
Finance courses are taken at the 300 and 400 levels, though 400 level students
will be required to offer Business Policy and Entrepreneurial Development
courses. T o graduate students admitted to the 4 year programme of the
Department must successfully complete 170 credits. Students undergoing the 3
year programme are required to accumulate 135 credits in order to graduate.
Students are expected to earn the following credits at different levels to remain
in the Department:
(i) T o move to the next level, students must earn minimum credit
as follows:-100 Level – 23 Credits
200 Level – 20 Credits
300 Level – 22 Credits
(ii) T o remain in the faculty and on probation, students must earn
minimum number of credits as follows:-100 Level – 12 Credits
200 Level – 10 Credits
300 Level – 11 Credits
Any student who accumulates less than the credits specified in
(ii) above will be required to withdraw from the University.
(iii) A verage credit units required to graduate are 170 credits.
(iv) If at any time during the session, a student falls ill and desires to
apply for temporary withdrawal, such application must be
supported with medical report and presented within 30 days of
such student’s absence from school.
DURATION OF DEGREE PROGRAMME
(i) A candidate shall normally not spend more than six years for a four-year
honours degree programme.
(ii) A candidate shall normally not be expected to spend more than five
years for a three – year honours degree programme.

MODERATION AND EXAMINERS
(a) All question papers on the 100 to 300 levels shall be moderated
internally . External examiners shall participate in the vetting of
questions and the marking of scripts for all final year examinations.
They shall participate in the determination of overall results and in the
classification of degrees. The Faculty may also bring in external
examiners at the other levels when it deems it necessary .
(b) DEP ARTMENT AL BOARD OF EXAMINERS.
The Head of Department shall be the Chief Examiner for his/her
Department. There shall also be appointed an Examination Officer
who will be responsible to the Head of Department. He/she will be in
charge of the conduct of examinations and the recording and return of
results. The Board of Examiners in the Department consists of the
Academic staff.
(c) F ACUL TY EXAMINA TIONS COMMITTEE AND F ACUL TY
BOARD OF EXAMINERS.
There shall be a Faculty Committee of Examinations Officers. The
Faculty Examination Officer shall be appointed by the Dean. The
function of the Faculty Examinations Committee is to plan for
examinations and to prepare results for the Faculty Board of
Examiners. The Faculty Board of Studies/Examiners shall meet at the
end of each semester to consider the results of the examinations held in
that session.
CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREE
Classes of degree are to be awarded depending on the Cumulative GP A
obtained. The classes of degrees that may be awarded are First Class Honours,
Second Class Honours (Upper Division), Second Class Honours (Lower
Division), Third Class Honours.

Second class honours (Upper Division) 3.51-4.50
Second class honours (Lower Division) 2.51-3.50
Third class honours 1.51-2.50
Pass 1.00-1.50
